Extensive Experience from Northwestern University Alumni

I have been helping students prepare for the GRE for more than 7 years. My specialty is the quantitative section, but I can also help students with verbal and writing. My students have gained acceptance at top Graduate schools including Tufts, Vanderbilt, and Harvard. I have had students obtain perfect scores in the quant section of the GRE.

I have over 1800 hours experience tutoring for Wyzant, in addition to my private students.

Patience & Understanding

As a child, I struggled with dyslexia. I had to overcome that obstacle to graduate valedictorian of my high school class and obtain a Chemical Engineering degree from Northwestern University. So I understand that students learn in different ways. If my student is having difficulty understanding a problem I always ask myself, “What assumptions have I made that the student is not aware of?” or “How can I explain this problem from a whole different perspective?” As a result, I have had success with GRE students at the very low end (initial scores of 135 raised to 150) as well as students at the higher end (initial scores of 160 increased to 167 or higher).

Sometimes students are nervous or even embarrassed by their math skills because they have not been required to do math in years, even though they are often very successful in their fields and may already hold a graduate degree. I am able to meet students wherever they are. As a student gains confidence in math they often experience rapid progress.

Proven Approach

My approach to GRE math tutoring is to follow an outline of content review including concept review and examples during tutoring sessions. I always make sure a student is successful with basic problems before advancing to the more difficult GRE level problems. I always follow up with homework problems that reinforce content for the student to complete between tutoring sessions. I usually begin tutoring sessions by answering any questions the student has about homework problems before continuing with new content review.

If time is an issue, I have some strategies that, with practice, can reduce time to setup and solve problems on the GRE test. I have writing prompts and I can help students learn to communicate in a concise and grammatically correct way in the essay portion of the GRE. I also have strategies to improve vocabulary and reading comprehension. Practice tests are an essential part of preparation and can give the student a realistic idea of their progress.
